Vertigo - My Story

Naturally speaking, I'm not a blonde. With the help of a genius hair stylist my hair is some version of blonde every six weeks. Because of the blonde thing I have going on I can sometimes live up to all the jokes that are out there about blondes. I can be as gullible as the next blonde over, but a dizzy blonde, well that is a whole other story!

Dizzy is a new term to describe me and has come to define my life a little bit of late.

Here is a song I remembered hearing at some point in my life. I have dubbed it my theme song. Go ahead, click on the link below and have a listen, I will wait on you.

If I think back I'm not really sure when this dizzy thing really began for me, I know all the way back in the early 1990's I had some episodes of feeling dizzy when I had ridden on a train, but have come to learn that that was just motion sickness. I know that in the past couple of years it has kept me from getting out of my bed at least 5 or 6 different mornings, maybe a few more. It absolutely stops me in my tracks and renders me completely helpless. I lay in bed and the room spins and I make myself sleep, even though I have to pee like mad most times but there is no way to get out of bed. It is a wonder I haven't stirred up an old UTI over the past few episodes because I would "hold it" rather than suffer the consequences of lifting my head off the pillow and making myself walk to the bathroom.

Two weeks ago I had a bad episode where I was in bed for two days and never did fully recover from the dizzy feelings. I got better and went on with my life, but surely I was not fit to get in my car and drive down the road most days. But I did. Why? Because I have responsibilities and things to do and places to go. The only sigh of relief in my day was the moment I pulled in our driveway and I knew I was home again for another day.

This week, on Monday morning, I woke up with that dizzy feeling again, I gingerly lifted my head off my pillow and I fought through the feelings of dizzy and nausea and I made my way out of bed and somehow made it to my 8-5. I know I never should have gotten on the road, I was feeling like a disoriented drunk at this point, but the sense of duty takes over and you do what you gotta do, right? When the doctor's office opened for the day I called and was able to get in on Monday afternoon and so I went to see my doctor and she told me I had Vertigo and she tried to explain it a little bit, and then prescribed some awesome pills that magically made the dizzy go away for me and she also asked me to go take some therapy to help my inner ear issue.

I made it all the way through Tuesday because I was taking those magic pills that absolutely slowed me down, I was off in la-la land all day on Tuesday and as soon as the dizzy came back I would pop another magic pill and keep on going with my day and night. On Wednesday morning I got up and went off to my therapy appointment, it was 45 minutes from my house and by the time I got there I was a mess, but I made it. Bottom line, I made it all by myself and didn't cause any accidents on the way!

I entered a new world when I opened the therapist's office door. First of all...very nice ladies and so helpful.

After signing all the proper paperwork and sitting there for a few moments the therapist, Amanda, came over, introduced herself and led me back to a table on the left side of the very large rehabilitation room. After we situated my glasses and handbag she started to question me and take down notes and then when we got to the part about my magic pills she looked disappointed that I had taken them the day before and she cautioned me that likely because I had taken those babies, that we were not going to find the problem today.

UGH!!

But Amanda persisted and she explained to me what was likely going on with me. She said that your inner ear has a flat part and three tubes attached to the flat part. The flat part has "rocks" in it and the tubes have a honey like substance running through them. The rocks are what helps us to remain balanced. In the case of Vertigo, one of those rocks break free and take a ride in one of the three tubes attached to the flat part of the inner ear. This is how I remember her telling it to me, and if there is a doctor or nurse reading this and in the know and I'm not spelling it out correctly, forgive me, and explain further please.

Amanda told me there is only one way to know without doing X-rays if one has a rock loose and in the tube and for sure has Vertigo and that is by tilting ones head a certain way and watching what the eye ball does. The eyes and ears are connected to each other. She explained how I was going to lay on the pillows so my head was going to be tilted downward and my chin toward my "armpit" and then she told me what was going to happen next and next and so forth. She told me if there is a rock I will be dizzy but to keep my eyes open and push through the dizzy because it will subside. She also said that most folks have a loose rock in their right ear and so we were starting there.

After no bells and whistles really went off during the right ear procedure, Amanda told me we probably wouldn't find it today because of having taken those magic pills the day before, but we were going to try the left ear just in case. As soon as my head was in position for the left ear procedure the dizzy overcame me, I was nauseous and Amanda was gleefully announcing, "Oh, there is the rock!" and her assistant was like, "Yeah, you can really see it!" I don't know what they saw, I felt my eyeball twitching like crazy and I pushed through the nausea and after going through all the different head tiling's and then finally sitting upright Amanda was pretty excited to know which side my rock was and which side she would need to work with. She told me that only about 15 percent of the folks she helps with will have a rock loose in their left ear, it is much more often that she finds them in the right ear. So, interestingly enough, I got to do both my ears, but now we know...so I'm not complaining.

I was told that I could not work on the computer for 24 hours and that I was to remain upright and no bending or lifting until I went to bed and not to go to bed until 11 PM last night. After 11 PM I was supposed to continue on with my life as though nothing ever happened and if something turns up from now until my next session it will help her figure out what to do.

My eyes have been so strained the last six months or so and I felt like my eyesight was fading and I was not sure if I would ever really become a writer because I wasn't sure I would have the eyesight for it, and now today...after all that maneuvering of the rock in my left inner ear, my eyesight feels so much less strained and everything in my world is so much clearer! It has been amazing and so far the dizziness has been subsiding. I'm still feel a bit tired and disoriented, but it is a far cry from how I felt even just yesterday morning. I go back for a second session next Wednesday and hope we can clear this thing up completely. I'm hopeful.

Below you will see a diagram of an inner ear I found out there on the Internet. In one of those tube like things is where the "rock" had landed and just by maneuvering my head around we were able to get that rock to slide back into place, I guess. It seems a little bit like magic to think that could work and I had to think about the person who figured out how to do this! Non-invasive and almost painless except for the part where you get nauseous for awhile.

Anyway, I guess I wanted to write about it because it seems like a lot of folks are dizzy and have dealt with Vertigo. If you have a similar issue you may want to ask your doctor about this procedure.

Now I'm just blonde and you will probably still get a good one over me now and then and I will still live up to the blonde jokes that are out there, but one thing you can't say about me anymore is that I am a dizzy blonde!

Book Review

Under the Heavens by Thomas Nye

In this book you will meet a young lad from the city, Lenny, and how he reluctantly came to spend a summer at his Amish grandfather's farm. There are twists and turns and a girl and horses, lots and lots of horses. Lenny has a lot to learn and he has a wonderful teacher, actually a few teachers it ends up and not always in the way one would think. By the end of Lenny's time on the farm he has come to learn a lot about himself and has resolved a few issues. There are many character lessons in Lenny's story and I think would be a good story to read to your children and then talk about some of the lesson's Lenny learned.

There is no doubt in my mind the author loves horses and knows a lot about them. He also understands the Amish and how they work a farm. It was nice to read a more "realistic" view of the Amish in a book of fiction. I find so often the Amish fiction books I've read are so far from realistic I can hardly find "Amish" in the book but for the word. Tom Nye hit the nail on the head with being authentic and realistic in his portrayal of an Amish working farm.

For me, it was a bit of a chore to work through the first few chapters just because there was so much about the horses, but my husband read the book as well and he told me that every Amish man would love to read this book and he is planning on sharing it with his brothers. Having said that I believe it is a book that folks who are interested in the Amish and farm life in general - especially horses will want to read. I am recommending this book to anyone who is interested in knowing more about the Amish, if you want the "feel" of Amish, you will want to invest in this book because it is as true to life as anything I've ever read.

i found an amish horse whisperer

The alarm didn't go off this morning. It's Saturday, so no need to be structured today. But my internal alarm went off at 6:20 AM. There never truly is "sleeping in" for me.

So far today I've set six rib-eye steaks to marinate and cut up a watermelon and I made a delectable potato salad and now I'm set for our dinner guests tonight. I don't like steak. I know, I know, I'm not like most folks. It is just too much to chew. A smoked pork chop sounded much better to me, so that is what I'm having. There are hot dogs and hamburgers for the two little guys who are joining us.

I love our local butcher shop. I called them up and gave them my order; told them I would pick it up on my lunch hour. Because they were so efficient in getting my order ready I had enough time to make the trek home and put my purchases in the fridge before returning to my 8-5. We live in the country, I work in the country, and so round trip I traveled at least 20 miles or a few more to get that meat in the fridge and be back in my chair in the office within the hour. I even had time to make one of those hot dogs I purchased and eat it on my way back to my office.

Love that butcher shop!

Persecuted

I don't want to be all depressing, but have you all heard in the news of the lady is going to be flogged and hung for her Christian belief? It sounds like she has two years to spend with her children and then she will be flogged and hung. When I hear such things it is hard for me to kind of "go on" with my daily life and feel at peace with what I'm doing. My life seems so superficial when I think about others in the world who are living such a hard, hard life, being persecuted for their faith and not allowed to live freely as I do.

Knowing of situations like this make me think deeply and unsettles my soul.

I'm sure that is how God meant it to be, so we pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ.

Just pray, when you think about it, for this lady and others whose stories we don't know about.

As I was looking through my camera this morning I was surprised with what I saw. I knew, of course, that I had taken pictures, but just didn't know how they had turned out. I hope you will enjoy my show and tell.

Earlier I had shared on Facebook a picture of a new little colt our neighbor's horse had recently. They also graze in our pasture, which is where I took these pictures. Here he is with his mama and some of the other family members in the background.

Another shot of just mama and son.

Is there anything cuter right now?

Curious.

And so are they. Curious at what is going on, on the other side of the fence.

You know I always have to insert a cat picture somewhere!

Sorry to those of you who totally despise cats.

Some folks despise cats....I don't understand their ways.

The Amish Horse Whisperer

My neighbor, Mr. Amish, was out in his field the other day so I grabbed my camera and from the shelter of our cottage on the hill I took pictures through the screen in the door, because I didn't want Mr. Amish to see me clicking away.

But here he is breaking a horse. This all happened in about five minutes time.

Not kidding at all.

Love this, I wonder what he was saying to his horse?

Awe...how sweet!!!!

Amish Country

The yellow in this picture makes the whole thing so pretty, but then to really look at the picture and see the horses and the cows way in the back and, of course, the farm buildings, the silo, it all just screams, Amish Country, USA!

It was in the heat of the day and these very smart cows found reprieve from the the sun under this grove of trees. How pretty are they?

One horse was taking herself a very long drink.

I have a thing for fences and yellow flowers mixed in with green grass. This picture is just for me, but you may enjoy it too.

This was up, high on a hill. I love the stone chimney, and I have a feeling there is more to this little cabin on the side I couldn't see, what do you think?

Gorgeous.

Garden to Table

When I came by this farm, I just had to stop and get a few pictures close up. I wish you could see these fields for yourself. On the other side of the road there were two teams of horses and two Amish fellows working the ground. I didn't want to take their pictures because I know how much they don't like that. I so badly wanted to take their pictures though, but it would have been too "in their face" so I let it be.

Love the little shed in the background.

A field that wasn't quite finished being plowed, it just struck me as so pretty, maybe it because of the woods in the background and the straight rows and the greens all around the brown of the dirt.

Garden of Eden?

A couple months back I had written a post about an Amish man and his toys. You can read about him here.  Well, Dan and his wife Anna invited us over for dinner this past Thursday night and I took my camera along because I knew that we were in for a real treat. Dan and Anna have created this little haven beside their home and they share it with all kinds of people. They love to cook and grill and bake and they also enjoy entertaining. I feel so blessed to have been invited over to partake of this cozy little abode they have created. Fancy vacations are not on their radar, they would rather sit around a good campfire with their family and friends then to see the world.

Below you will see parts of their little haven. I took so many pictures, but I can't put them all here, but I hope you get the gist of what it was like when we were there. My only regret is that because they are Amish I couldn't take a lot of pictures with all of us visiting, etc.

They were making pizza for us in their pizza oven. The men were standing there watching the fire and Anna is looking at the campfire I think. That is as close of a picture you will see of this fine couple.

Pizza ready for the oven. They baked three pizzas, but there was no way we could eat all of them. They were so delicious!

Pizza in the oven.

Doesn't that look beautiful and delicious?

It was! And we sat right beside the oven to eat and it was a gorgeous night too. What a treat! There was also grilled chicken and cole slaw and muskmelon and pecan pie and ice cream and they baked an apple crisp in the pizza oven, as well. The food flowed like there was no tomorrow and every morsel was tasty and perfection.

This is their fire ring that was sat around later in the evening. Dan had taken us back out to his shop so that Mr. Wonderful could see his toys too.

There were two red birds, maybe cardinals...I don't know my birds...flying through the tree tops, chasing each other and I finally was able to get a shot of the one.

Across the street is a farm. Isn't that just beautiful through the trees and flowers? The cow! Perfect spot for it when I was clicking away.

Bloom where you are planted. Dan and Anna for sure, for sure bloom where they've been planted. Such giving people, they could give lessons in how to be hospitable.

Yep! That happened too as I was taking pictures, do you here the horse's shoes hit the pavement? clip clop clip clop

This was our campfire, just starting.

Smoke in the trees.

As the night moved in on us, there was less light, but the campfire was nice and bright.

It was a most pleasant night and one that inspired me and blessed me.

The one who calls me mommi.

Love his little lips and his shadow!

Priceless!

I love him so much...he just makes my heart swell up!
